The Rider was started in 1970 by Aidan Finn. It was the first Western discipline publication in Canada at the time and it was called The Canadian Western Rider.  The Rider saw many changes over the years just as the market we were servicing changed. In 1973 we began the Canadian Quarter Horse Journal in a magazine format. In 1974 we began a short lived French Canadian version of The Western Rider. In the late 70’s we changed The Rider’s format to a magazine and changed it’s name to The Canadian Rider, dropping the word Western in order to attract English readers. By 1983 we had merged the Canadian Quarter Horse Journal and
The Canadian Rider and our new title was The Western Rider/ Canadian Quarter Horse Journal. In 1990 we launched the English Rider which was well received. In 1994 we merged all three publications together to form The Rider, an all breed, all discipline, newspaper reporting specifically on the Ontario equine industry with highlights from the rest of Canada and the world. In 2000 we brought out a new look logo and punched up our colour content and story coverage. We have had many associations choose us as their official newsletter over the years. The Western Horse Association Of Ontario and the Quarter Horse Racing Owners of
Ontario Inc. have been with us for over three decades.  They have been joined by the Ontario Quarter Horse Association, Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada, the Ontario Trail Rider Association and other prominent groups.
