August 2017 is a very exciting time for the Icelandic Horse community. This is because the World Championship will be taking place August 7-13, 2017 in Oirschot, The Netherlands. Every 2 years the Icelandic Horse World Championships take place in a different venue. With 21 countries internationally involved with the Icelandic Horse, the Worlds are well represented.
Over 7 days there will be competitions for Sport and Breeding. This an opportunity to see the best of the best from around the world. Icelandic horses are well known for their extra gaits “Tolt and Pace”. At the Worlds you will see the spirit and character of each horse while performing these gaits in addition to the walk, trot, and canter.
Before the World Championships are officially “open” there is a relay from the previous venue.
The entire distance is travelled by horse and rider no matter what the terrain. This year riders even boarded a ferry with their horses to complete the journey. Of course the horse involved are well trained and not afraid of traffic.
