AJAX DOWNS, AUGUST 2, 2023 - Less than three months after obtaining his jockey license, 22-year-old ALEXIS SANCHEZ won his first stakes race when guiding the 2-year-old filly SNOW MAGICALLY SWEET to a nose victory in the $58,095 Ontario Bred Futurity for 2-year-olds at Ajax Downs on August 2. In fact, the Futurity win on Milena Kwiecien's black filly was Sanchez's third winner on the seven-race card, a memorable day for the rider who has also won races on Thoroughbreds at Woodbine and Fort Erie.

The 4th running of the Ontario Bred Futurity at 300-yards had a field of seven led by Trial winners Pretty Magicall, owned by Kwiecien and trained by Jason Pascoe and George Coleman's Sugar N Pride, trained by Bob Broadstock. The latter was made the even-money favourite by the fans watching and wagering on the Ajax Downs Quarter Horse races while his stablemate General Skywalker, was made the 7 to 2 second favourite.

Snow Magically Sweet, a fast closing third behind Pretty Magicall in her Trial win was sent off at 7 to 1 and was quick out of the gate and led a charge of five juveniles through the stretch run to the wire and prevailed by a whisker rover Sugar N Pride, ridden by Rachael Isaacs with General Skywalker a head back in third and Pretty Magicall a nose behind in fourth.

The time of 15.969 was good for a 77 speed index.

"I didn't really know anything about the filly,' said Sanchez, whose father Ramiro Sanchez Castillo is a leading rider at Ajax. "I was just riding with confidence and riding for Jason and Milena, who gave me a chance to ride this filly."

Snow Magically Sweet became the first stakes winner for her sire Maryland Magic, who stands at Kwiecien's Snow Pony Farm in Burlington. ON. The Futurity winner was bred by Brooke Sisson.

  • Horses are more secure and comfortable when trailering if they can face the rear, but they prefer openings.
