The 15th edition of the Maturity is the first 400 yard stakes race of the 2026 season.
AJAX DOWNS, JULY 7 2026 - Some of the top older horses at Ajax Downs will compete for the bulk of the $44,280 purse for the ONTARIO BRED MATURITY, the featured race on an eight-race card Wednesday, July 8. First race post time is 3:30 p.m.
The 15th edition of the Maturity is the first 400 yard stakes race of the 2026 season, and three past Horses of the Year will have a rematch of their meeting in the Norman Picov Maturity, which was on June 21. In that race, 2025 champion HAD TO BE FABULOUS got back to winning form by leading all the way to win by half a length, escaping much traffic trouble that some of her rivals endured.

Had to Be Fabulous, who had her winning streak halted at 10 when she broke slowly in a race on June 3, is expected to go off as the favourite from post six with Ismael Mosqueira riding.
SNOW MOOSE, the 2023 Horse of the Year, may have got the worst of the trouble in the Norman Picov as he was pushed out and squeezed back, losing all chance. The big grey won this race in 2024. J.B. Botello rides Snow Moose from post 4. THE BATMANN, also a grey, traded bumps with Snow Moose out of the gate in the Norman Picov but was still charging at Had to Be Fabulous near the finish. Helen Vanek will ride the Scott Reid trainee and they have post 5.
One of the up-and-comers in the field is PEIGHNTMEADIAMOND, trained by Joe Tavares for Richard Wincikaby. The tall, 4-year-old gelding had a strong season opener when he defeated Chillin With Peeps, winner of last week's Ontario Bred Derby, and he will enjoy stretching out to 400 yards. Brian Bell rides from post 2.
Also on Wednesday's card is the first 2-year-old race of the season, and a full field of eight first-time starters, four fillies and four boys, has been entered to sprint 300 yards. There are two youngsters in the race by Ontario sire Rushago, sire of current star Chillin With Peeps. Amber Archibald will send out IMABLAZINRUSH with Brian Bell riding and Corey Illman, who stands the stallion, has BAREF HURRICANE RUSH in the field with Corry Beland up.
REMINDER: One of Ajax Downs' most anticipated days is Sunday, July 19 when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police perform the iconic Musical Ride at the track on Sunday, July 19. The RCMP will also host a complimentary meet-and-greet with the Mounties and their horses. The RCMP Musical Ride and attendance to Ajax Downs for racing, is a ticketed event.
