August 31 Deadline for Youth Contest Entries!

Ontario students, are you working on your stories, poems and sketches for the Youth Literary Derby and / or Youth Art Derby?

Just a reminder that the deadline for these contests, presented by the Bill Galvin Racing Alliance’s (BGRA) is August. 31, 2025.

The Literary Derby is open to students in Grades 3 to 8 and the Art Derby is open to students in Grades 3 to 12, as of June 30, 2025. There are junior and intermediate divisions in the Literary Derby and junior, intermediate and senior divisions in the Art Derby.

Students can write stories or poems about Standardbreds for the Literary Derby and sketch or draw anything with a Standardbred theme for the Art Derby. The theme for these contests is anything and everything to do with Standardbred horses.

Division winners in each contest will receive $250, second prize will be $150 and third place will take home $100. Sponsorship for the prize money is thanks to the generosity of St. Catharines, Ont. based owner and breeder Tom Rankin.

Winners in the contests will also receive complimentary registration for online Horse Behaviour and Safety courses courtesy of Equine Guelph.

Contest rules, videos, resources and other information are available on the BGRA website at bgracingalliance.ca.

What Our Clients Think

  • Horses are more secure and comfortable when trailering if they can face the rear, but they prefer openings.
