The Ontario barrel racing community will be coming together for more than just competition this spring. On May 30, 2026, riders and supporters will gather at Charlie Hill Equine for the Farmers Dash Fundraiser Barrel Race, an event dedicated to supporting farmer mental health through the Farmer Wellness Initiative and Agriculture Wellness Ontario.

The event is being organized by Sienna Sovereign, who hopes to use the power of the equine community to support another vital part of agriculture: farmers.

Sovereign previously co-hosted the Brain Power Barrel Race two years ago and has been motivated ever since to organize another event that combines competition with a meaningful cause. The inspiration for this year’s fundraiser came unexpectedly while she was listening to the radio and heard an advertisement for the Farmer Wellness Initiative. After reaching out to contacts within the agricultural community and learning more about the program, the idea for the Farmers Dash quickly gained momentum.

For Sovereign, the event is also deeply personal. Farming has been a part of her family history for generations. Her grandfather was the last of seven generations of farmers in Ontario, and agriculture continues to play an important role in her life today.

Through her involvement in the Ontario Equine Education and Employment Program and the broader equine industry, she has seen firsthand the pressures that farmers and rural communities face.

“Farming is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be incredibly stressful and isolating,” Sovereign explains. “Mental health resources specifically designed for farmers are so important.”

Programs like the Farmer Wellness Initiative support the mental health and well-being of farmers and their families by providing education, outreach, and resources tailored to the unique challenges of agricultural life.

The connection between farming and the horse industry runs deep in Ontario. Many riders come from agricultural backgrounds, and farms across the province rely on the strength of rural communities to continue operating. By bringing riders together for this fundraiser, Sovereign hopes to break down the silos that can exist between different parts of the agricultural world and demonstrate that the equine community stands alongside farmers.

Support for the event has already begun to grow across different sectors of the industry. Standardbred drivers from Woodbine Mohawk Park have committed to coming together in support of the initiative, pledging financial contributions to help sponsor the barrel race and further its impact.

The Farmers Dash Fundraiser Barrel Race will take place May 30 at Charlie Hill Equine in Orton, just outside the Town of Erin. Expos and practice runs of the barrel pattern will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the official show at 11:30 a.m. Competition will include Open 4D Barrels, Youth 3D Barrels, and Open 3D Poles, with a Dash for Cash running at the end of the event.

In addition to the competition, the event will feature a silent auction and a food truck, creating a fun day for riders, families, and supporters alike.

All funds raised will go directly toward supporting the Farmer Wellness Initiative and Agriculture Wellness Ontario. Businesses are encouraged to get involved through sponsorships or silent auction donations, while community members are invited to attend and show their support for farmer mental health.
