The Youth Literary Derby is for students in Grades 3-8, with junior (Grades 3-5) and intermediate (Grades 6-8) divisions.
The Bill Galvin Racing Alliance would like to remind Ontario students that their stories, poems, sketches and drawings for the Youth Literary Derby and Youth Art Derby are due by Monday, Aug. 31.
The Youth Literary Derby is for students in Grades 3-8, with junior (Grades 3-5) and intermediate (Grades 6-8) divisions. Students can write a poem or short story with a Standardbred theme.
The Youth Art Derby, for Grades 3-12, has junior (Grades 3-5), intermediate (Grades 6-8) and senior divisions (Grades 9-12). Entries for the Art Derby should be a drawing, sketch or painting with a Standardbred theme.
Division winners will receive a $250 prize, with $150 going to second and $100 to third. The prize money is generously sponsored by Tom Rankin of St. Catharines, ON. Finalists over the age of 12 will also receive Horse Behaviour and Safety courses, courtesy of Equine Guelph.
Finalists will be invited to Woodbine Mohawk Park for an awards night where they will participate in behind-the-scenes activities, enjoy a meal and receive their awards.

A group of Ontario harness racing enthusiasts who were friends and associates of the late Bill Galvin, formed the BGRA to promote Ontario harness racing in the Hall of Famer’s honour.
The mission of the BGRA is to work together to create and encourage partnerships and programs that will promote and grow harness racing by engaging the public with the racing community.
